An 'Heads Up'

Hi all
Just an advance notice that from Tuesday evening I am 'out of town' for nine days. I'll still hopefully have internet connection where I am so can check in, but not as frequently as I do now.
The Jamroom Team has been running at 50% capacity for the past week, just at the time when Ning imports have took off, so we have been stretched keeping up, to say the least, but the other two guys will be back this week so can hopefully respond to your questions here then if I'm not around at the time.

So, can I ask that all of you that have been emailing me directly with questions post them here, or on the main Jamroom forum instead? All the team will then see them and be able to respond, and that will also benefit other users who may have the same issues.

Thanks
Paul

Just a followup that Douglas and I will be online this week (I'll be back in the office full time starting Tuesday) so we will absolutely do our best to help out everyone we can.

Once Paul is back things should move pretty well - right now all of you "early adopters" are working through things that in the next month we will have fully "smoothed out" with a custom Ning Skin, better Ning-related options in many of our modules, etc.

I just want to say I appreciate everyone's patience - many of you are seeing the rough edges, and our goal is to have everything working really well - we'll get there but it's just going to take a little bit more time, but thank you for all your feedback and patience while we work towards the goal.

Thanks!

Hi -I'm back. Have I missed anything? ;-)

I seriously need to get a good nights sleep then tomorrow I'll catch up with what Brian has been doing with groups and imports etc. and then get back into the swing of things here again, particularly if any of the imports I did before need bringing up to spec.
Exciting ning times still :-)

Yeah - a lot has happened in the past week or so and I'm a bit lost as well, but have been catching up all morning so if you want, I can log into your imported site and make sure you are up to date with the latest modules and skins?

That also goes for anyone else I've imported. Let me know.

Yes. They will give you an understanding of Jamroom right from the basics through to building your own custom modules. All the techniques can be applied to any skin. I'd recommend all Jamroom site owners to do this. The fact that yours is an imported Ning site doesn't make it any different to any other Jamroom site. Its just been 'pre-loaded' ;-)

That's the goal. Make the front section more configurable. Its still in beta right now as I work through all the issues. Once its stable by itself, then we can look to getting it into the ning focused skins.

Beta discussion is going on here if you want to add your input:

Thanks Michael...I'm so lost on all the coding and how to create a site similar to my ning site. Doesn't have to be the same but I think it's important to my members to have a lot of the same features that they are used to. For me I want to be able to add, change and modify things without having to hire someone to help me. That defeats the purpose for me. I'm really pretty lost as to how to even begin. I've really appreciated all the help I'm getting from Paul..it's my inability to comprehend that's the problem.

Hi Pam
I've brought your site up to speed with respect to the latest Group/Discussion/Page handling. Look it over and see what you think.
One thing you need to do is attach any of the imported pages to their original groups. The Ning archive doesn't include the information to do that automatically so it needs to be done 'by hand' after import.
Log in as admin and go to ACP=> ProfileGroups=> GroupPages=> Tools=> PageGroupConfig
Also note that all Ning discussions that were not a group discussion have now been imported to your profile forum at http://yoursite.com/pam/forum

Hi Paul

Thank you for helping me out. Looks really good and it's rewarding to see the development progress. Is there a way to reorder the posts and photos. The ones from 2008 are showing first and not the newest ones...the first members that signed up are showing first rather than the newest also the comments on the individual members profiles are the earliest to the newest.

Pam, I just brought this issue up in its own thread, see below, and i'm hoping to have some input on it, as it may have various long lasting effects on our sites:

:target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://contemporarymosaicart.com/core/skin_menu_modify/id=7

Nope, that's not the section you want. That's for the dropdown menu under the users profile name. (see screenshot)

If you wanted to add another page next to say "Images" in the top row of links, then that is done in the
ACP -> SKINS -> NINGJA -> TEMPLATES -> header_menu_desktop.tpl -> MODIFY

Around line 123 ish you'll see this code:
            {if jrCore_module_is_active('jrGallery')}
                <li><a href="{$jamroom_url}/{jrCore_module_url module="jrGallery"}">{jrCore_lang skin=$_conf.jrCore_active_skin id="36" default="Images"}</a></li>
            {/if}
That reads "If the jrGallery module is active, include this link in the header to the gallery page."

You could add another link in there after that like this

<li><a href="{$jamroom_url}/elephants">elephants</a></li>
and that would add a link to:
http://contemporarymosaicart.com/elephants

But I know you don't like messing around with code. We're trying to get the Site Builder system up and running so you won't need to do this. What was the other link you wanted for?

Pam- your cPanel is where you access your stuff and your settings on your SERVER and your server account. You log into your server account (not JR) to get to your cPanel. Once there, you can look for your file manager folder to see where your 'stuff' is. Also in there, look for your "Public_html" folder and you'll recognize some of your stuff there.

P.S. I know it's not your job to teach me coding https://www.jamroom.net/data/media/0/0/jrSmiley_131_smiley_image.png
:style="height: 20px" alt=";-)">

Above we are talking about how to add a link to a page. its just this:
<li><a href="{$jamroom_url}/artists-spotlight">Artists Spotlight</a></li>
But thats just a link to a location. You also need to create what is supposed to be there at that location, so you need a new template file too.

So what you want is to create a file:
/skins/(YOUR SKIN)/artist-spotlight.tpl

That is what will show when you go to the url:
http://YOUR-SITE.com/artists-spotlight

Right now that file doesn't exist, so you will get a "Page not found" error.

You can play around with saving stuff, it might break sometimes but that's how you learn. Breaking is nothing to worry about, it can always be fixed. So have a play.

What you need inside that artist-spotlight.tpl is some code to tell the page what to do.

If you look at the index.tpl file that already exists in your skin it will look something like this:
{jrCore_include template="header.tpl"}

// A bunch of code in here.....

{jrCore_include template="footer.tpl"}

That's where you would design the page to make "Artist Spotlight" have the stuff you wanted in it. (The site builder's aim is so you don't have to do this stuff. It will be here soon.)
